Department of Medical Laboratories
Historical background:
In the year 2007 , Sheikh Abdallah El-Badri established a health technical college with a building area of 1,800 square meters, aiming to provide medical assistants to grant technical diploma degrees in the specializations of (nursing – pharmacy – medical statistics – dental assistants). Studies began in 2008 , and it was opened. In January 2009 .
It was proposed to add the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program (General Bachelor’s Degree) to the College’s programs by the University’s Faculty Board and then the University Senate due to the mandate’s strong need for these cadres in the field of medical laboratories and the high demand of students for these programs, so it was necessary to prepare for the establishment of this program. Thank God, a significant number of medical devices and equipment for this program were imported from outside Sudan (China) at the expense of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Badri.The first batch was accepted in 2013. With the number of 60 male and female students for general admission and 30 students for special admission, the development continued in completing the department’s infrastructure and successive admission of two new batches in the years 2014-2015 with those estimated numbers. It was necessary to follow this steady development in terms of its equipment and laboratories, and the development of the curriculum items to keep pace with everything that is new.
The laboratory curriculum was revised by a committee of specialists to add some important materials that help the student understand the specialized subjects, such as introduction materials to pharmacology and antibiotics – community medicine and epidemiology – some important techniques for forensic laboratories – biostatistics, in addition to amending some lecture titles. According to recently published scientific research and information. Which increased the number of credit hours from 152(The approved plan) to166 credit hours, and accordingly the program grants a Bachelor of Honours degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences instead of a general Bachelor’s degree. The committee also suggested that the student graduate in the final year with two specializations, as most medical and health sciences tend toward specialization, similar to their counterparts from faculties in Sudanese and international universities.
Summary of the committee’s recommendations:
- Approving the courses added to the study plan with their approved hours.
- Approval of the student’s graduation with a Bachelor’s degree with honours instead of a general bachelor’s degree based on the increase in credit hours.
- Approval of amending some lecture titles.
- Approval of the final year student’s graduation proposal with two majors.
- The two specialization subjects are chosen according to the averages and grades in the final year, with a total of 19 credit hours in the seventh semester and 14 credit hours in the eighth semester.
